What are HEPA Filters?

You may have heard of HEPA filtration products but not know what that means. These special air filters must pass a minimum level of efficiency and filter out smaller particles than standard filters. HEPA technology was originally developed for nuclear facilities before being used in hospitals. Today, there are several applications for HEPA filters in the home.

Standards for HEPA Filtration

A filter can only be labeled a true HEPA product if it removes 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. Filters that are labeled “HEPA-like” do not meet these specifications.

HEPA Filters for the HVAC System

Every HVAC system has an air filter that needs to be changed regularly. These filters vary in thickness, quality, effectiveness, and price. For the HEPA label, you’ll pay more, but they also trap more particles than standard HVAC air filters.

Because of this, HEPA air filters become clogged faster and need to be changed more often. They also cost more than other types of filters, but if you or your family members suffer from allergies or respiratory problems, they are well worth the cost.

HEPA Vacuum Cleaners

A HEPA vacuum is a smart investment for homeowners with pets and people who have allergies. They clean more thoroughly by collecting smaller particles than a regular vacuum. Keeping floors clean has a direct effect on air quality, so use a HEPA vacuum to eliminate allergens that contaminate the indoor air.

HEPA Air Purifiers

If you want to take an extra step in improving indoor air quality, get a HEPA air purifier. They remove bacteria, viruses, dust, dander, and mold spores from the air. Add HEPA air purifiers to bedrooms and the main living areas to make your home’s air as healthy as possible.
