Tidying Your Closet

Neat and well-organized living spaces contribute to a relaxing home. Don’t overlook your closet if you’re working on decluttering the house. Creating a tidy and functional storage area is a project you can tackle on the weekend. Clean and organize your closet so you can make the best use of your storage space.

Remove Everything Before You Organize Your Closet

The first step in organizing your closet is to clear everything out. Remove clothes, shoes, hangers, and storage bins so you can clean the space. Wipe down the walls and shelves and vacuum or mop the floor. If you need to repair or paint the closet, this is the perfect opportunity. Taking everything out also allows you to do an inventory of your wardrobe.

Declutter Before You Organize Your Closet

After you’ve removed everything from the space, start sorting the items and grouping them into the following categories.

  • Set aside the things that you will keep. These are items you still wear regularly and enjoy. If you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in a year, reconsider allowing space for it in your closet.
  • Clothing and accessories in good condition can be sold online or at a local consignment store. These don’t belong in your “keep” pile, so store them in a box and set a deadline for selling them. Anything that hasn’t sold by the date should be donated.
  • Use a cardboard box to gather items you’ll donate. If you have belongings that are still in good shape but don’t want to bother selling them, donate them to a charity. As you fill a donation box, carry it to your car so you can drop it off the next time you run errands.
  • During the process, keep a garbage can nearby. If you find damaged, out of style, or otherwise not wearable clothes or accessories, put them in the trash.

Closet Organizational Tools

After you’ve sorted your belongings, you’ll have a clear idea of the things you need to organize. Make a plan for the closest space you have available. Your new closet design may include purchasing storage bins, baskets, or hooks. Add a small chest of drawers or shelves to create space for your things. A local home improvement store will have closet organizational systems available, and some are customizable to fit your space.
