More Home Maintenance Tasks You Probably Haven’t Thought Of
Last month, we described some home maintenance tasks that are important but often forgotten. In Part 2, we have expanded upon this list and included some chores that are especially beneficial during the summer.
Give Your Basement Window Wells a Cleaning
Your basement window wells, when kept clean, protect your basement from rain and snow and provide the only source of outside light to the basement. It is often forgotten to clean them out periodically, but it is an important one of your home maintenance tasks. The first thing to do is grab a trash bag and some gloves and remove anything that has accumulated down there. If you have a shop vac, use it to suck up any smaller pieces of debris.
You may consider getting covers for your window wells. These additions will discourage the buildup of debris and you won’t need to clean the window wells as frequently.
How to Clean Your Fridge Condenser Coils
This chore is admittedly a pain, but it is necessary to do occasionally to keep your refrigerator running efficiently. The coils get clogged with dirt and dust, making it harder for them to cool. Find the coils either on the back of the refrigerator or on the front at the bottom, behind a kickplate. Before you do anything, unplug the appliance and shut off the water.
Using a coil condenser cleaning brush to remove all dirt, pet hair, and dust from the coils and then run a vacuum over it. You can buy the brush at a hardware store or online.
Hose Down Your Air Conditioner Condenser
Your AC’s condenser coils also need to be kept clean for maximum efficiency. To do this, first, make sure that the unit is in the “off” position. Refer to the manufacturer’s handbook to find out what brand coil cleaner you should get.
Before applying the cleaner, spray it down with a hose to get rid of grass, leaves, twigs, or whatever else might have gotten trapped in there. Then spray the coils with the coil cleaner and follow the instructions on the container about how long to let it sit. After the time is up, hose it down to wash away the cleaner. Be sure to use eye protection and gloves while performing this task.
